Editor’s Note: Unitree, China’s “humanoid robot first stock,” lists on the STAR Market today in what could be the defining IPO of China’s robotics boom. Baidu’s AI business just crossed the halfway mark of its revenue for the second straight quarter. And Xiaomi says its MiMo desktop app is coming soon, while its robot makes its public debut at this week’s World Robot Conference.

Commentary: The pattern this week is hard to miss — Chinese AI is moving from “catching up” to “shipping products and going public.”

I. AI Foundation Models

  1. Baidu’s Q2: AI revenue crosses 50% for the second straight quarter

    • Summary: Baidu reported Q2 revenue of ¥31.3 billion; AI accounted for 50% of its ex-iQIYI business revenue, with GPU cloud growing 283% year-over-year for the fourth consecutive triple-digit quarter. CEO Robin Li says the company aims to complete its primary Hong Kong listing by year-end.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Two quarters above 50% is a narrative shift, not a blip. Baidu is now structurally an AI company with a search business, and Wall Street has noticed — two major funds added positions this quarter.
  2. Xiaomi’s MiMo desktop app is coming; next-gen model in training

    • Summary: Xiaomi CFO Alan Lam revealed on the earnings call that MiMo will launch its first desktop application soon, handling office and daily tasks in one workflow. A next-generation MiMo model is also in training.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Xiaomi is quietly building its own model playbook — open weights for developers, consumer apps for everyone else. Watch the desktop app as a test of distribution muscle.
  3. Alibaba releases HappyShrimp music model: describe a feeling, get a song

    • Summary: Alibaba unveiled HappyShrimp (快乐虾米), an AI music generation model that turns natural-language descriptions of emotions or memories into songs, aiming to make music creation accessible to everyone.
    • Source: QbitAI · 2026-08-17
    • Editor’s Take: China’s AI labs keep moving beyond text into creative generation. Music is a crowded space globally, but Alibaba’s distribution into its own ecosystem gives it a real edge.
  4. Doubao’s “virtual desktop” lets the agent operate Windows for you

    • Summary: ByteDance’s Doubao upgraded its task mode with a new virtual desktop capability that can operate Windows computers through GUI understanding — no MCP, APIs or plugins required — without disturbing the user’s own workspace.
    • Source: Leiphone · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Skipping APIs entirely and just looking at the screen is the most universal agent interface yet. This is how agents finally reach every legacy enterprise app.
  5. Alibaba’s Qianwen Office connects to WeCom, completing coverage of all three major office platforms

    • Summary: Alibaba’s agent product Qianwen Office officially integrated with WeCom (Enterprise WeChat) today, after earlier connecting to DingTalk and Feishu — full coverage of China’s top three collaborative office platforms.
    • Source: QbitAI · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Office is the battleground where Chinese AI agents will prove themselves, and Alibaba just booked a seat on every table.
  6. WeCom 5.0.10 opens CLI and MCP: main AI agents can plug in directly

    • Summary: Tencent’s WeCom released v5.0.10, opening CLI and MCP interfaces for all businesses — WorkBuddy, DeepSeek Harness, MiniMax Code and other mainstream AI agents can now tap into documents, spreadsheets, email and meetings.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18

II. AI Software & Applications

  1. NetEase unveils “Bee AI”: an AI capability foundation for its content ecosystem

    • Summary: NetEase held a media briefing for Bee AI, its unified AI capability platform, already deployed in the youth community app NetEase Bee — representing NetEase’s push from tool to companion-style AI.
    • Source: QbitAI · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Content platforms are racing to wrap AI around their communities. NetEase’s bet is that “companion” beats “tool” for retention.
  2. Alibaba enters the agent context war with MyContext

    • Summary: QbitAI reports Alibaba is building a data-processing layer for agents — MyContext integrates DingTalk chats, enterprise documents and work data so agents finally understand the user’s actual daily workflow.
    • Source: QbitAI · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: “Context is king” is moving from slogan to moat. Whichever company lets agents truly know the user will own the next decade of enterprise AI.
  3. Baidu’s AI revenue crosses 50%: two Wall Street funds pile in

    • Summary: Following Baidu’s Q2 report — AI at 50% of ex-iQIYI revenue — 13F filings show Druckenmiller’s Duquesne Family Office built a position in Baidu ADRs while another major fund added shares.
    • Source: Leiphone · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Legendary investors taking Chinese AI seriously is a signal the re-rating story is real, not just narrative cheerleading.

  5. Alibaba sells Lingxi Interactive for ¥10.1 billion

    • Summary: Alibaba officially sold its gaming subsidiary Lingxi Interactive to Cinsay Capital for ¥10.1 billion, part of the company’s ongoing focus on its core AI and cloud businesses.
    • Source: Leiphone · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Alibaba keeps trimming non-core assets to fund the AI war chest. The ¥10.1 billion is small change against what it will burn on compute.

III. Humanoid Robots

  1. Unitree to list on STAR Market today — China’s “humanoid robot first stock”

    • Summary: Unitree Technology debuts on Shanghai’s STAR Market today (August 19) after its IPO roadshow became famous — founder Wang Xingxing stayed nearly three extra hours answering every investor question. Wang says he foresaw the technology direction back in 2016.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Unitree’s listing is the liquidity event the entire Chinese humanoid sector has been waiting for. How it trades on day one will set the tone for every robot IPO to follow.
  2. Xiaomi robot to make public debut at World Robot Conference

    • Summary: Xiaomi president Lu Weibing said on the earnings call that Xiaomi’s robot will appear publicly for the first time at the 2026 World Robot Conference, with initial focus on smart manufacturing assembly lines.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Xiaomi plays the long game — no hype videos, just “we’ll show it at the conference.” The factory-line-first strategy is the pragmatic entry point the industry needs.
  3. Chinese team behind π0’s simulator releases new world simulator

    • Summary: QbitAI reports the Chinese team whose simulator was cited in π0 has released a new world-simulation work — building a more realistic “second world” where robots can practice tasks like pouring beer before touching real hardware.
    • Source: QbitAI · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: World simulators are the hidden arms race under every humanoid robot program. China is quietly competitive here.
  4. Symbiosis Robotics demo: humanoid robot drives a go-kart

    • Summary: Symbiosis Robotics released a demo of its bipedal humanoid driving a go-kart, the company’s first public showcase of whole-body intelligence, promising more tests ahead.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Driving requires balance, coordination and dynamic control all at once — a smart stress test for whole-body intelligence.
  5. Nvidia chief’s daughter visits LG robot factory days after partnership deal

    • Summary: Madison Huang, Nvidia’s senior director of Omniverse & robotics product marketing and Jensen Huang’s daughter, visited LG Electronics’ robot data factory in Seoul — four days after the two companies signed a cooperation agreement.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Nvidia’s robot strategy runs through “data factories” that simulate real environments. LG’s facility is the first visible piece of that global rollout.
  6. Robot vacuums enter the “replacement” age: Roborock P30 Pro tested

    • Summary: ITHome’s review of the Roborock P30 Pro calls it a true generational upgrade — 60°C hot-water drum washing and an 8.98cm ultra-thin body, marking the flagship robot vacuum’s biggest redesign yet.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: The most shipped “robots” in China are still vacuums. Every engineering win there funds the harder stuff.

IV. Autonomous Driving

  1. Pony AI robotaxi revenue hits record as sales jump 69%

    • Summary: Bloomberg reports Pony AI’s robotaxi revenue reached an all-time high, with total sales jumping 69%, as China’s autonomous ride-hailing operators scale past the early-adopter phase.
    • Source: Bloomberg · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: Robotaxi revenue records are no longer one-off headlines — 69% growth signals a genuine inflection in China’s robotaxi economics.
  2. WeRide’s Q2 beats: revenue up 82%, overseas revenue +164%

    • Summary: WeRide reported Q2 revenue of ¥232 million, up 82% year-over-year and 103% quarter-over-quarter, beating market expectations (¥170-180M); overseas revenue grew 164% YoY with gross margin at 37.5%.
    • Source: TMTPost · 2026-08-18
    • Editor’s Take: WeRide’s numbers are good but the market remains unconvinced — the stock story now hinges on whether overseas expansion can compound.
  3. Hesai H1 net profit up 234.9% to ¥88.9 million

    • Summary: Lidar maker Hesai reported H1 net profit of ¥88.87 million, up 234.9% year-over-year on revenue of ¥1.54 billion (+25.1%), marking continued profitability for China’s lidar champion.
    • Source: ITHome · 2026-08-18
