Surge in Battery Installation Volume: Should Robot Entrepreneurs Copy Strategies or Forge Their Own Path?
Last week I had drinks with a friend who builds wheeled robots. He was stressing out about battery selection. He had two proposals from suppliers: one using CATL prismatic aluminum-cased cells—260Wh/kg energy density, 2000-cycle lifespan—but the module size was fixed. To fit it into the chassis, he had to raise the robot's overall height by 15mm, which shifted the center of gravity upward and caused him to fail stability tests. The other option was a pouch cell solution from a smaller manufacturer; its energy density and lifespan were significantly worse, but the shape could be customized to hug the chassis curve tightly. He asked me which one to pick. Instead of answering directly, I fired back with a question: What is your mass production target in units? He went silent.
