Why Are Google Speakers Getting Smaller?

I saw that Wired review right when I was debugging a small tool I wrote. The review mentioned the Google Home Speaker released in June 2026, noting that Google's smart speaker product line has become unprecedentedly simple. I checked the data, and Google has cut at least 7 SKUs from its smart speaker lineup over the past five years, leaving only two flagship products now.
