SageMaker Doesn't Lack Features, It Lacks Your Team's Own Workflow

Platforms like SageMaker have plenty of features; the real risk is that you think buying it automatically solves your team's process problems.

The team has recently been doing AI infrastructure selection, and I flipped through its feature page from start to finish. The coverage is indeed broad — from training, deployment, to Model Monitor, Clarify, Debugger — it basically covers the entire ML lifecycle. For someone managing a data science team, that completeness is reassuring. There's a customer review in the material I agree with: the biggest value of a managed service is that the team no longer has to worry about underlying infrastructure and can put energy back into the models themselves.

I noticed something while flipping through the feature page. Mechanical Turk, Ground Truth, Augmented AI — these modules related to data labeling and human review — are no longer open to new customers, and Studio Lab and Role Manager are on the same list. The platform is consolidating toward the core pipeline; most mature products do this.

For teams already running production workloads on it, this is good. For teams just coming in, it's a reminder: don't tie your architecture to those edge components; first figure out whether you want a full-pipeline platform or a few stable foundations.

My advice to the team is: before signing, spend two weeks going through your own data labeling standards, experiment logging habits, and model release approval chain. If these things aren't clear, no matter how complete the platform is, you'll still get stuck on questions like "who decides whether this model can ship."

From an organizational perspective, tool selection ultimately comes down to the team's own maturity. The platform can give you compute and tools, but it can't give you a decision chain.

That's all I have to say.

Don't stare at the feature page, first ask who sets the annotation standards—this process is way harder to deal with than the platform.

Who sets the annotation standards? This is exactly what the OP meant by "who decides whether a model can ship." Ground Truth is shut down — which set are you annotating with now?
