FAQ / Guidelines
This is a civilized public discussion space
Treat this forum like a park. We are also a shared community resource where you can share skills, knowledge, and interests through ongoing conversation.
These are not hard rules, but guidelines to help people judge our community, making it a friendly, civil place for public discourse.
Improve the Discussion
No matter how small, always add something positive to the discussion to help us make this a great place for discussion. If you're unsure whether your post adds value to the conversation, think about what you want to say, then give it a try.
One way to improve the discussion is to spot problems that have already occurred. Take some time to browse existing topics before replying or starting your own; you'll have a better chance of meeting like-minded people.
The topics discussed here are important to us, and we hope you show that they are important to you too. Respect the topic and the people discussing it, even if you don't agree with their views.
Be Agreeable, Even When Disagreeing
You may want to offer opposing opinions. That's fine. But remember to "attack the argument, not the person." Please avoid:
- Name-calling
- Personal attacks
- Responding to the tone of a post rather than its actual content
- Refuting without thinking
Instead, provide thoughtful insights that improve the conversation.
Your Participation Matters
Our conversations here set the tone for every new visitor. Choose to participate in discussions that make this forum an interesting place, helping us shape the future of this community — steer clear of discussions that don't move the forum forward.
Discourse provides tools that allow the community to collectively identify the best (and worst) contributions: bookmarks, likes, flags, replies, edits, follows, mutes, etc. Use these tools to improve your own experience and everyone else's.
Let's make our community better and better.
If You See Problems, Flag Them
Moderators have special privileges; they are responsible for this forum. So are you. With your help, moderators can become community facilitators, not just gatekeepers or overseers.
When you see bad behavior, please do not reply. Replying acknowledges the bad behavior, encourages it, consumes your energy, and wastes everyone's time. _Just flag it_. If enough flags accumulate, automatic action will be taken, or moderators will intervene.
To maintain our community, moderators reserve the right to remove any content and any user account at any time for any reason. Moderators do not preview new posts; moderators and site operators take no responsibility for any content posted by the community.
Always Be Civil
Nothing destroys healthy conversation more than rudeness:
- Be civil. Do not post anything that a reasonable person would consider offensive, abusive, or hateful.
- Keep it clean. Do not post obscene or explicit sexual content.
- Respect each other. Do not harass or blame anyone, impersonate others, or expose their private information.
- Respect our forum. Do not spam or otherwise disrupt the forum.
None of these are specific terms with precise definitions; please avoid any such content. If you are unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post appeared on the front page of a major news website.
This is a public forum, and search engines will index this discussion content. Ensure your language, links, and images do not compromise the safety of your family and friends.
Keep It Tidy
Strive to put content in the right place so we can spend more time discussing and less time cleaning up. Therefore:
- Don't start topics in the wrong category; read the category definitions.
- Don't repost the same content across multiple topics.
- Don't post empty replies.
- Don't change the subject mid-thread.
- Don't sign your posts — every post comes with your profile.
Don't post "+1" or "Agreed"; use the "Like" button instead. Don't discuss existing topics from completely different directions; use "Reply as linked topic" instead.
Post Only Your Own Stuff
You must not post digital content belonging to others without permission. You must not post descriptions, links, or methods for stealing someone else's intellectual property (software, video, audio, images) or violating any other laws.
Powered By You
This site is powered by you, the friendly moderation team, and you (the community). If you have any other questions about how things work, open a new topic in #meta and let's discuss! If you have serious or urgent issues that cannot be resolved via meta topics or flags, please contact the moderators.
