Pentagon Loans for AI Cloud: Leveraging Compute Power

Just saw the news: The Pentagon is in talks for a loan with Fluidstack, a GPU cloud startup. WSJ and Reuters have slightly different angles—some say it's about building AI data centers, others emphasize US power and cooling equipment capacity. This divergence itself is worth watching.

My first reaction is that this looks like adding a layer of sovereign credit to AI infrastructure. Commercial models used to focus on financing costs, GPU rental rates, and deployment speed; now we also have to look at political cycles, approval chains, and delivery metrics. Those beautiful capex curves in backtests will encounter slippage in live trading.

The evidence is direct too. This money appears as a loan, which doesn't change whether the project has cash flow, only who bears the tail risk. If power, cooling, or equipment deliveries get stuck, even low interest rates won't save the launch.

I tend to understand this as compute shifting from internet infrastructure to national capability. Valuation models need to isolate this variable, otherwise the Sharpe ratio might look okay, but one policy shift could max out the drawdown.
