Using a One-Pager to Judge if AI Will Drive Double-Digit Growth

Last week, a friend asked me if AI would soon push GDP growth rates into double digits. You can simply understand GDP as how much a country produces in a year; double digits means growth exceeding 10%. My first reaction was "I don't know." My second reaction was that this question can't be answered by emotion alone. Before asking if it will change the world, ask if the evidence forms a chain.

So I did a very light task: building an AI growth signal checklist on a single page.

Preparation requires just one document, one browser, and one AI tool. I used Bing, Wall Street Insight (Huaerjie Jianwen), Cailian Press, Hacker News, and Claude. I've just started using Bing these past few days, used Wall Street Insight and Cailian Press for two weeks, and Claude for about a month.

First, draw a 2x2 table in the document. The horizontal axis represents Macro and Micro; the vertical axis represents Input and Output. The four quadrants are: Input side (compute, capex), Macro side (GDP, employment), Micro side (enterprise revenue, costs), and Social side (public expectations, regulation). The goal is to force yourself not to look at just one side.

For the Input side, search Bing for AI compute doubling every six months. Find the Brownstone Research article. It states that compute power—the amount of work machines can calculate—is doubling every six months. Note: Doubling compute does not equal doubling GDP.

Then search Wall Street Insight for AI capital expenditure, sort by latest, pick three recent quarterly reports, and record only the direction: increasing, flat, or slowing. Capital expenditure is the money companies spend on buying equipment and building data centers.

For the Macro side, search Cailian Press for GDP AI contribution. Open Hacker News and search for Will AI soon lead to double-digit growth. I stumbled upon this article in the last four days; the author's viewpoint is direct.

Probably not. Here is why.

Record this sentence in the Macro quadrant. It represents the judgment of a class of researchers: Don't overstate AI-driven growth in the short term.

Check Goldman Sachs' related statements by searching Bing for AI may start to boost US GDP 2027. This roughly means that AI's significant contribution to US GDP might not become clearer until 2027.

Continue filling in the Micro and Social sides. Search Wall Street Insight for AI enterprise revenue and Cailian Press for AI cost reduction efficiency gain. Record two types: who is actually saving money, and who is just talking concepts.

Search Bing for AI jobs survey Pew and note one fact: 64% of American adults believe AI will reduce jobs over the next 20 years. This influences regulation and public opinion.

Then let AI compress this into conclusions. Open Claude, start a new chat, and paste the following:

"Here is evidence across four quadrants... Please organize using SWOT. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. Then answer: Based solely on this evidence, is the probability of AI bringing double-digit GDP growth in the next three years high or low? Do not fabricate numbers."

After the output, delete any sentences without sources. In my testing, it's good at compressing scattered materials into structure, but bad at judging causality for you.

There were a few pitfalls. First pitfall: Mistaking compute for growth. Doubling compute only indicates infrastructure expansion; it could also mean prices are too high or demand hasn't kept up. Always pair input-side evidence with output-side evidence.

Second pitfall: Only looking at positives. Many people get excited after searching for AI news. Force yourself to write two pieces of counter-evidence.

Third pitfall: Letting AI generate specific numbers. Do not include numbers without sources in the table. Write source keywords next to each piece of evidence.

Once the one-pager is done, whether AI drives double-digit growth depends on a set of mutually constraining evidence. Whoever can build the evidence chain can avoid being led by emotions.

Next step: Find three pieces of evidence each for AI costs, revenue, and delivery cycles in your industry, and make a similar one-pager. I keep this template on the first page of my doc and add one sourced line every week.

From a financial perspective, compute depreciation is brutal. Is the cash flow healthy?
