Solo AI Development: Don't Rush to Treat It as a Team Template

Just came across a retrospective on using AI for solo project development over eight months, titled "Getting Out of the Loop." The author says that when he doesn't even know what he wants, AI's help ranges from "useless" to "harmful," especially noticeable in architecture.

I basically agree with this assessment.

Over the past month, I've run several rounds chaining together Codex, Claude Code, Copilot, and CI. Looking just at generation speed, it really feels like having a few tireless engineers added to the team. But once you get into boundaries, rollbacks, and acceptance testing, problems arise. AI can quickly autocomplete code, but it won't answer for the team why a feature exists, who is responsible if it fails, or who takes the blame when production issues occur.

Having led platform teams of over a hundred people, what I fear most is this illusion: individual delivery gets faster, so organizational efficiency must improve. That's not necessarily true. Without clear product definitions and testing thresholds, AI just amplifies execution noise. Previously, one person grinding for three weeks would at least retain architectural judgment in their head; now generating ten versions in a day, no one can clearly say which version is more stable during the final review meeting.

So I don't recommend taking "eight-month solo AI development" directly as a team template. A better path is to start with a small, well-defined pilot. One requirement, one set of acceptance criteria, one automated regression test, one rollback-capable version. This direction is worth investing in, provided you've calculated the ROI.
