AI organ age estimation: Technically sound, but costs need careful calculation

Researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences published a study this week using AI to estimate the biological age of organs from histological images. The fact that organs age at different rates isn't news scientifically, but previously we had to guess based on a bunch of biochemical indicators or resort to direct biopsies. Now they train models on tissue slices to get results just by looking at images. Apparently, in the future, a single blood tube could tell you which organ is aging first.

Data barriers might be harder to break than technical ones... Tissue slices have to be annotated one by one by doctors, right? This job varies depending on the hospital's staining standards. The model would probably go blind if moved to another location haha.
