River AI, founded by ex-xAI co-founder, raises $1.1B just two months after launch
Funding Scale: $1.1 billion (Seed + Series A combined)
Lead Investors: General Catalyst, AMP PBC
Strategic Investors: NVIDIA, AMD Ventures
Follow-on Investors: Y Combinator, Temasek
Valuation: Undisclosed
On August 11th, River AI, founded by former xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, announced it had completed a $1.1 billion funding round. For a company established only this June with a team of about 20 people, this scale of funding is extremely rare.
Founder Background: Babuschkin previously worked on WaveNet and reinforcement learning research at DeepMind, then joined OpenAI to participate in the large-scale training of GPT-2/GPT-3. In 2023, he co-founded xAI with Elon Musk. He left xAI in August 2025 to found River AI.
Technical Route: River AI bets on open-source models and personal AI, with the core philosophy that "AI should not be controlled by a few companies." Its first product, River API, allows enterprises to choose open-weight models and utilize their own data for fine-tuning and continuous learning.
Long-term Vision: To let users truly "own their intelligence"—models shouldn't just remember preferences but should be continuously trained based on long-term usage feedback, changing their capabilities. This stands in stark contrast to the current mainstream centralized API model.
Signal Value: The simultaneous strategic investment by NVIDIA and AMD implies that chip giants are betting on the "decentralized AI" route. Securing $1.1 billion just two months after founding also reflects the market's extreme premium on frontier AI talent.
