$9.1B compute lock-in: I don't quite understand Anthropic's move here

A friend recommended this news, saying Anthropic signed a huge deal with Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms, asking me—an infrastructure guy—to weigh in. At first, I thought it was a joke; mining companies selling compute power to AI firms? That's a big crossover. But after checking, it's true: $9.1 billion, 20 years, 191 MW, at the Rockdale campus in Texas.

From an organizational perspective, the trade-off of this decision isn't just about tech iteration risks; it also involves team stability. Locking in compute resources lets researchers iterate with peace of mind, without having to stress daily about not getting enough resources. This is a hidden benefit for team growth.

This statement needs careful consideration. A 20-year contract is indeed aggressive, but media will interpret it as Anthropic having strong confidence in its technical roadmap and brand stability, while also sending a pressure signal to traditional cloud providers.

Locked in for 20 years... that price really isn't cheap, bro. Anyone in AI knows this industry changes every year. In my article last week about the compute bubble, I mentioned similar concerns. 191 megawatts sounds impressive, but who could have predicted what models running today would look like five years ago? This deal was probably locked in because their finance department needed it, forcing them to commit.
