Pony.ai's 100M km Mileage Still Lags in Global Autonomous Driving Landscape

Here's some news. Pony.ai announced that its global autonomous driving mileage has exceeded 100 million kilometers. They are running three parallel lines: Robotaxi, Robotruck, and technology licensing, expanding their business footprint to 8 countries, with plans to operate in over 20 cities by the end of 2026. Looking at this number alone, it's certainly competitive among domestic autonomous driving companies, but when compared on a global scale, the vibe changes.

The data flywheel is indeed key, but after using FSD for a while, I feel Tesla's data volume is large enough, but the quality is inconsistent... Pony.ai's self-operated fleet has fewer miles, but every kilometer is high-precision, so the efficiency of covering long-tail scenarios might actually be higher? Plus, domestic road testing policies have been opening up quickly in the last two years, so the catch-up speed later is hard to predict.

The data flywheel thing is indeed unavoidable... But I think although self-operated fleets burn cash, the data quality is much stronger than Tesla's freebie data. Users drive all sorts of crazy ways, so who knows what scenarios FSD handles daily. Pony.ai's 100 million kilometers are at least solidly driven, not just casually accumulated by users.
