Beyond AUC: Doctors Ask 'Is It Clinically Validated?' as the Real Test
During my years working on AI imaging at United Imaging, what scared me most wasn't model training, but taking reports to the head of radiology. You'd talk about 99% sensitivity, and he'd ask directly: "Have you tested this on our old equipment? What's the miss rate under different parameters?"
Later, we learned our lesson. We took the model to three hospitals for a month first. We tested in CT rooms, ERs, and health check centers, recording actual usage feedback from doctors in each department. In real-world scenarios, lighting, breathing, and patient positioning can cause metrics to plummet. Without on-site immersion, no matter how pretty the parameters look, it's a paper tiger. Product managers shouldn't just stare at scores; clinical validation is the hard truth.
