Samsung Electronics CEO Roh Tae-moon Increases Stake by 700M KRW: Can 'Responsible Management' Boost Valuation?

I noticed an interesting detail: Lu Taewon's recent increase in his Samsung Electronics holdings was at a purchase price of 230,000 KRW per share, totaling about 700 million KRW. That works out to over 60% of his H1 2024 compensation (1.097 billion KRW). For the head of the DX Division (mobile + home appliances, with annual sales of 170 trillion KRW), this isn't a trivial sum, but it's not exactly life-altering either. What's really intriguing is the timing—he just received the largest executive equity incentive in Samsung Electronics history (treasury shares worth 175.2 billion KRW, covering about 1,000 executives), and immediately followed up by buying more with personal cash.

700 million KRW is just a gesture vote for someone heading a department managing 170 trillion KRW. Samsung has 100 trillion in cash on its books, yet its buyback intensity is weaker than some startups. If they really want to prop up valuation, they should first increase the scale of buybacks and then fix the HBM lagging issue. Insider buying won't change the competitive landscape.

Haha, 700 million KRW... In our hardware circle, that's barely enough to buy a few UR robotic arms plus a LoRA training card. But then again, this move is pretty much like those open-source community maintainers who make 'proactive commits'—on the surface, it looks like responsibility, but in reality, they're probably just hurting from the stock price drop?
