Behind MacBook Air Shortages: Should AI Developers Wait for It?

Bottom line first: If you're mainly doing AI development, even if you're just running inference on Llama 3.1 8B, the MacBook Air isn't worth waiting for right now—it's not an issue of stock shortages, it's simply not suitable for this kind of work.

Running small models is okay-ish. I tried running an RL training environment on an M1; with 8GB, even a simple PPO tends to crash. 16GB can barely handle a basic version, but hyperparameter tuning is basically impossible. Did your int4 quantized reward convergence curves look normal?

When running Stable Diffusion, memory pressure hits red and swap usage reaches 10GB. At this frame rate, encoding efficiency is basically dragged down by memory issues. I tried switching the model to int4; the quality loss is visible to the naked eye, and the air's heat dissipation problem makes things even worse.

Wait, you're saying 16GB RAM is the passing grade? Last week I just used HeyZoku to build a small script for local inference, and my 8GB M1 Air stuttered like a slideshow... Passive cooling really can't handle it; this thing shouldn't be used for heavy lifting at all...
