Are we replacing thinking with AI while forgetting what thinking actually is?
From the perspective of cognitive science, Altman's concerns aren't new. Clark and Chalmers already pointed out in their 1998 "Extended Mind Thesis" that human cognition naturally relies on external tools—from paper and pen to calculators, and now LLMs. But there's a key difference here: past tools were "executors," we still needed to design steps and interpret results; whereas today's AI is a "completer," it directly outputs answers, skipping the intermediate process.
