30,000 Hours of Tactile Data: A Breakthrough in Haptics or a Sample Size Trap?
This conclusion needs data to back it up. The N0 series models, jointly released by XinZhi Embodied and Fudan University, claim to have filled in the robot's "sense of touch" using 30,000 hours of tactile data. This sounds like a qualitative leap in perception. But as a quant researcher who has spent years dealing with financial time series and factor validity, my first reaction is: Is the sample size really enough? 30,000 hours converts to 108 million seconds in terms of time series, which looks massive. But when we are dealing with high-dimensional tactile signals—where each time point might contain hundreds of pressure, temperature, and texture features—is this number sufficient to support the model generalizing to the infinite variations of the real world, or is it a variable worth digging deeper into?
