Tesla Hires Safety Operators in South America: Robotaxi Ground Game Costs Are Higher Than You Think
Tesla’s job postings in Chile and Colombia might look like they’re just hiring a few "AI Safety Operators" for Robotaxi services, but based on my years of experience representing automotive production line upgrades, this is actually a cost-calculation stress test by Tesla for overseas deployment. I’ve organized the public information as follows: Tesla currently operates a Robotaxi fleet of roughly 300-400 vehicles in California. Each vehicle runs an average of 12-15 hours per day, and with safety operator costs calculated at a local hourly wage of $25, the daily expense for a safety operator per vehicle is approximately $300-$400. Labor costs in South America (Chile and Colombia) are about 1/3 to 1/4 of those in the US, with hourly wages around $6-$8. This means if Tesla wants to replicate the US model in South America, they could save approximately $30,000 per vehicle annually just on safety operators alone.
