From Lab to Launch: Google Gemini's Silence and Hidden Barriers in the AI Race
Last Wednesday afternoon, I was in the lab helping a second-year master's student debug his cross-modal retrieval model. He ran into an old problem: the alignment between visual features and text features wasn't robust enough, leading to confusion in few-shot scenarios. I suggested he look at the PaLI-X paper published by Google in 2023, as that model performed very solidly on vision-language understanding tasks. He casually asked, "Professor, what's the relationship between PaLI-X and Gemini? When exactly is Gemini 3 coming out?" I froze for a moment and said, "I'm not sure." Then he smiled and said, "Even Google itself probably isn't sure anymore."
