Apple AI Enters China: Filing is Just the First Step

I noticed an interesting detail: among the seven edge-side generative AIs filed for registration this time, Apple is the only player without a self-developed foundational large model publicly benchmarked against ChatGPT or GPT-4o. Huawei's Xiaoyi is backed by the Pangu series, OPPO's AndesGPT originates from Andes, vivo's Blue Heart Large Model has been iterating since 2023, and Xiaomi's Pengpai AI is directly built on the MiLM architecture. Meanwhile, Apple Intelligence showcased capabilities at WWDC that are more about system-level integration—text rewriting, summary generation, image polishing—which essentially calls upon Apple's self-developed small edge-side models, plus larger models accessed via cloud through Private Cloud Compute. This architecture works fine in North America because Apple fully controls the data pipeline, but in China, data must be localized, cloud models must pass filing requirements, and OpenAI APIs cannot be called directly.

Running video tasks on 3B-7B edge-side models, the frame rate probably won't look optimistic. No matter how strong the A17 Pro's compute power, in frame-by-frame inference scenarios like video editing, single-frame processing latency might not even sustain 30fps. Balancing quality loss and encoding efficiency is also a pitfall.
