DeepMind's GNoME Helps Labs Synthesize 700+ Predicted Materials
KEY FACTS
- As of 2026, over 700 of the new materials predicted by DeepMind's GNoME have been synthesized by laboratories worldwide.
- GNoME predicted 2.2 million novel potential crystal structures, of which over 380,000 were judged to be thermodynamically stable.
- An AI-assisted R&D pipeline can produce 41 new materials in under a month.
- Molecules advanced with AI involvement have entered Phase IIa clinical trials, with plans to enter Phase III in 2026.
- Domestic players such as Zhipu, Baichuan, and Alibaba's Tongyi are all building out scientific models.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION
AI is shifting the bottleneck in research from 'can't think of it' to 'can't verify it fast enough.' After the dividends of compute and data, what's scarce is synchrotron beam time, GMP cleanrooms, and clinical beds. If capital only watches benchmark scores at the model layer, it will likely miss the hardware, pilot-scale, and validation segments that actually capture profit. Whoever builds the closed experimental loop first will be the one able to catch the ball AI is throwing.
