Musk to Build Chip Fab; Microsoft Debuts Local-AI Laptop
KEY FACTS
- Musk confirmed that Tesla and SpaceX will build and operate their own Terafab chip manufacturing facility.
- Terafab's long-term goal is to produce hardware equivalent to 1 terawatt of computing power per year.
- Microsoft teamed up with Nvidia to launch the Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by the RTX Spark chip.
- Microsoft unveiled its Windows hybrid intelligence plan, which lets some AI models run locally on the PC.
- A SpaceX document states that the company will still source a considerable share of its computing hardware from third parties in the future.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION
One giant is moving upstream to make chips, the other is stuffing compute back into the endpoint - both are fundamentally recalculating the unit cost of AI. The signal is clear: scale is no longer the only moat; whoever controls the entry points to compute production and scheduling holds the next round of pricing power. But building your own wafer fab is extremely risky, and local inference is not necessarily cheaper, so success still hinges on actual utilization rates.
