Chrome 155 enables JPEG XL by default; VS Code becomes AI agent console
KEY FACTS
- On October 6, 2026, Chrome 155 enabled JPEG XL decoding by default, using the Rust-written jxl-rs decoder.
- The format was removed by Google in 2022, but support from Safari and Windows plus developer pressure led to a reversal in November 2025.
- On October 7, 2026, Microsoft released VS Code 1.141, repositioning it from an editor to an AI agent management console.
- The new version adds session worktree cleanup, a cross-platform terminal sandbox, and a multi-session grid layout, with Copilot Harness migrated to a unified SDK.
- The sandbox is off by default; enterprises can force it on and prohibit bypasses, and simultaneous multi-instance GitHub Enterprise sign-in support was added.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Google's renewed embrace of JPEG XL is an admission of the power of open standards and the developer ecosystem; Microsoft turning VS Code into an AI agent console means programming tools are shifting from writing code to managing agents. Together, both point to one thing: platforms must adapt to AI workflows, not make AI adapt to old tools.
