Microsoft GitHub VP open-sources gputaskman GPU monitoring tool
KEY FACTS
- Scott Hanselman, Vice President at Microsoft and GitHub, has released gputaskman, an open-source GPU monitoring tool.
- The tool displays per-process GPU utilization, VRAM, temperature, power draw, clock frequency and other data.
- It can identify local large language model processes and show details such as the model, quantization method and layer count.
- gputaskman supports Windows, Linux, WSL and Apple Silicon Mac platforms.
- The tool is still an early experimental version, and some testers report that temperature data occasionally fails to refresh.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Windows' built-in Task Manager only shows total GPU utilization and cannot tell you which process is doing what. gputaskman builds per-process monitoring and LLM identification into an open-source tool, which is a real need for developers running large models locally. But unstable temperature refresh in the early version shows it is more of a signal than a finished product; the gap in GPU observability deserves more players to follow up.
