Tesla to cut Cybertruck output mid-next year, retool Texas plant for Cybercab

KEY FACTS

  • Musk said on X that Tesla will gradually reduce Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around mid-next year.
  • The cut is meant to free up capacity for higher output of the driverless taxi Cybercab.
  • The Cybercab was unveiled in 2024 with no steering wheel or pedals, and its first complete vehicle rolled off the line in February this year.
  • Cybercab mass production began in April this year, and it officially entered service in the US in September.
  • Cybertruck started production at the Texas plant in July 2023, and deliveries in North America began in late November of the same year.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION

By shifting Texas capacity from the slow-selling Cybertruck to the Cybercab, Musk is publicly admitting pickup demand fell short of expectations and moving his bet toward robotaxis. For the industry, this is a signal that automakers are voting with capacity and accelerating their shift to Robotaxi; but with Cybercab only two months into operation, the pace of real-world rollout remains to be proven.
