Microsoft Win11 search to offer optional Copilot AI integration

KEY FACTS

  • Microsoft plans to integrate Copilot AI skills into Windows 11 search by the end of 2026.
  • The feature is opt-in and disabled by default.
  • Users must enable it manually; those who do not will not see the AI entry point.
  • The new search prioritizes the local experience, allowing users to find files, change settings, and reply to text messages.
  • The new interface reduces the share of web content and uses a Windows native UI framework.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION

Microsoft stuffing Copilot into search yet leaving it off by default is a compromise after earlier controversy. For users, the choice is preserved, but the real test is whether later rollouts quietly change the default. If it is switched on by default, the so-called opt-in becomes wordplay, and the industry should watch the rollout closely.
