Google Requires Schools to Enable Gemini for Search Access, Drawing Political Criticism
KEY FACTS
- Google announced on Tuesday that K-12 schools must enable AI tools or they will not be able to use Google Search.
- Google's vice president of education said search and AI are now deeply integrated, and schools that have not enabled it will see a prompt.
- Political figures including Sanders and Blumenthal criticized Google's move on X.
- Google responded that access to AI products is off by default and that schools can choose to enable them separately.
- Google is developing a "guided learning" search feature for student accounts that walks students through solving problems step by step.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
By bundling Search and Gemini, Google is using schools' dependence on Search to force AI into the classroom, so the political backlash is entirely expected. What is more alarming is that once the default options in education are shaped by commercial goals, the autonomy of students and teachers is hollowed out. Google has promised that AI is off by default and that authorization is granted item by item, but the trust fracture has already appeared, and regulatory pressure will only increase.
