Microsoft splits Win11 AI PCs into 4 tiers, 8GB devices get cloud AI
KEY FACTS
- Microsoft has divided Win11 AI PC hardware into four tiers, Tier 0 through Tier 3.
- The lowest tier, Tier 0, covers 8GB-memory PCs, including Intel Core 3/4, AMD Ryzen 100/200 and Snapdragon X series.
- Tier 1 covers Copilot+ PCs with 16GB to 64GB of memory, spanning configurations such as Snapdragon X2 Plus.
- Tier 2 targets local AI model developers and involves hardware such as Core Ultra Next and RTX Spark.
- The top tier requires more than 128GB of memory and is meant for running frontier large models locally.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Microsoft has pushed the AI PC threshold down to 8GB of memory, essentially using cloud compute as a backstop so that old devices can also carry the AI label. This is good for users, but the four-tier split also means the local AI experience is still capped by memory and NPU, and actually running large models still depends on the top tier. The signal is clear: competition in AI PCs is shifting from concept to tiered implementation.
