OpenAI upgrades Chrome ChatGPT extension to read user tabs
KEY FACTS
- OpenAI upgraded its ChatGPT extension for the Chrome browser on October 16.
- After the upgrade, ChatGPT can read the content of tabs the user has open and answer based on it.
- In ChatGPT Work mode, the assistant can send messages on the user's behalf, fill out forms, and organize tabs.
- The ChatGPT sidebar in Chrome gains the ability to access the full chat history.
- The extension is available to all plans and is compatible with Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave, and Opera.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
The browser is shifting from an information gateway into the execution venue for AI agents. After abandoning its own browser, OpenAI stuffed its capabilities into the Chrome sidebar, effectively borrowing a rival's traffic pool as its entry point. Reading tabs, filling out forms, and digging through chat history - behind the convenience lies the question of permission boundaries: do users clearly know which pages the AI has seen, and how the data is retained? Before features like these go mainstream, privacy authorization mechanisms need to catch up first.
