Wayve to supply autonomous driving AI software to Volkswagen
KEY FACTS
- German media report that Wayve beat out more than ten suppliers to win the deal to supply Volkswagen with an autonomous driving solution.
- Wayve is responsible for developing the autonomous driving AI software, while CARIAD handles system integration.
- CARIAD is the software company owned by the Volkswagen Group.
- Volkswagen is jointly developing the related hardware with Bosch.
- Volkswagen previously demonstrated the solution in a major city in southern Germany.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Volkswagen handing autonomous driving software to an outside startup shows its in-house CARIAD route has stumbled and it is turning pragmatic about buying from outside. For Wayve, landing Volkswagen is a key step toward a mass-production endorsement from a European automaker, but integrating the software with Bosch's hardware will not be easy, and whether it can ship on time is the real test.
