Samsung unites company resources to speed up in-house humanoid robot
KEY FACTS
- Samsung Electronics has pooled its manufacturing, software, and semiconductor resources to develop a humanoid robot independently.
- Last month it set up the RX Business Promotion Office, with CEO Roh Tae-moon directly leading the business.
- It appointed Lee Dong-gun, former head of robot strategy at Hyundai Motor, as head of Samsung's robot strategy team.
- The company plans to use data from its home appliance and semiconductor production lines to train AI, and to build a data factory in Gumi.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Samsung's move is aimed at converting its massive hardware manufacturing advantage into deployable embodied intelligence. Through internal integration rather than simply relying on subsidiaries, Samsung is trying to close a full-stack technology loop from chips and motors to world models. Bringing in an executive with a Boston Dynamics background further highlights its ambition to benchmark against the world's top level. This signals that humanoid robot competition is shifting from lab demos to large-scale deployment in real industrial scenarios, and the entry of a traditional giant may reshape the industry landscape.
