OpenAI Chrome extension lets ChatGPT read your tabs
KEY FACTS
- OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so it can read the content of the tabs a user has open.
- In Chat mode, ChatGPT can compare product details across tabs, such as size, price and return policy.
- In Work mode, ChatGPT can send messages, fill out forms, organize tabs and manage calendars on the user's behalf.
- The sidebar version of ChatGPT now taps the user's full browsing history, letting them issue tasks without switching pages.
- The extension is available across all subscription tiers and is compatible with Chromium browsers including Edge, Brave and Opera.
PHYSIX OBSERVATION
The browser is shifting from an entry point into a context source for AI. After abandoning its own browser effort, OpenAI is using an extension to turn Chrome into its home turf. For users it is convenience; for Google it is traffic and data sovereignty being eroded further. Once AI can read tabs and history, the privacy boundary and platform countermeasures will be the next battleground.
