Google to migrate Gemini Gems to skills on Nov 17

KEY FACTS

Google announced it is shutting down Gemini's Gems feature and automatically migrating them to skills.
The migration begins on November 17, 2026, and users do not need to take any manual action.
Gems launched in 2024 for creating custom AI assistants with sharing support.
Gems remain fully usable until the migration, and Google is notifying users inside the Gemini app.
Skills must be selected by typing a slash "/" in the task thread.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION

By folding Gems into skills, Google looks like it is simplifying, but it actually exposes its old habit of repeatedly churning AI feature names and entry points. Users are forced onto slash commands, making the experience more engineer-flavored, and ordinary users may not buy in. As Meta and others accelerate toward integrated agents, if this kind of internal consolidation slows down ease of use, Google could hand over its first-mover advantage.
