Ai2 Releases HiRO-ACEv2, Cutting 3 km Climate Simulation Cost to 1/300 of X-SHiELD
KEY FACTS
- Ai2 released HiRO-ACEv2, the latest update to the HiRO-ACE system.
- The newly distilled model HiROv2 can simultaneously predict multiple high-resolution meteorological fields, no longer limited to rainfall alone.
- For extreme events with a one-in-a-million probability, HiROv2 achieves statistical matching error within 3%.
- The system generates global 3 km climate data at roughly 1/300 the cost of X-SHiELD.
- If only a single region is needed, cost savings can exceed 100x, depending on the size of the region.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION
Climate simulation has long been bottlenecked by compute cost, and Ai2 uses AI distillation to slash the barrier to one three-hundredth, meaning regional-scale extreme weather research is no longer the exclusive domain of large institutions. But the model depends on X-SHiELD training data and cannot yet transfer to a warming future or historical climates; generalization capability is the real test ahead.
