Korean consumer group files complaint against Tesla over FSD sales

KEY FACTS

  • A South Korean consumer group will file a complaint against Tesla with the Korea Fair Trade Commission on Thursday.
  • The group says Tesla marketed FSD to Korean owners who cannot legally use it.
  • Tesla Korea's head said FSD applies to only about 20% of vehicles registered in Korea.
  • Tesla has sold more than 170,000 Shanghai-made vehicles in Korea since 2023.
  • Tesla enabled FSD in Korea at the end of last year, limited to US-made models.
  • In August, Tesla switched FSD to a monthly subscription of 150,000 won.

PHYSIX OBSERVATION

Tesla sold FSD in Korea for three years and only applied for certification last year, and local safety rules conflict with the current version. With a consumer-group complaint and a regulatory probe bearing down at the same time, it is clear that the sell-first, comply-later model is getting harder to sustain in mature markets, and owners in other markets should be wary of similar marketing.
