XPeng Series 02: What Keeps XPeng's Technology Revenue Coming, Deal After Deal
XPeng's technology sales have already achieved growth through additional purchases from the same client. Volkswagen expanded from platform software cooperation to full vehicle electrical/electronic architecture development, with new tasks contributing R&D revenue; existing technology also secured post-production payment arrangements through contracts.
In 2024, He Xiaopeng spoke about long-term R&D investment in platforms, electrical/electronic architectures, and intelligent driving: "It is now beginning to translate into good financial returns." In March 2026, the first model jointly developed by XPeng and Volkswagen, the ID.UNYX 08, rolled off the production line, with development taking 24 months. As the car enters production, how does the technology XPeng previously delivered continue to generate returns?

Existing platform technology enters the client's production vehicles
The platform and software master agreement signed by both parties in 2024 covers two Volkswagen B-segment battery electric models for the Chinese market. Volkswagen obtained licenses to use the relevant technology for model development, production, and sales; the contract stipulates license fees and charges for certain post-production engineering support.
The master agreement specifies that the original intellectual property of the G9 platform remains with XPeng, and Volkswagen uses the relevant technology in the cooperative models through licensing. Platform technology that XPeng previously accumulated for its own models thus gains paid use by another automaker. The licensing arrangement extends returns on existing R&D results into the sales period of the client's models.
The interim report discloses that sales-linked license fees are recognized as revenue when the client's subsequent sales occur. Returns on existing technology are thus tied to sales of the models covered by the contract. Tracking this business requires matching the sales volume of cooperative models with the coverage of the license contract. Follow-on engineering services require XPeng to continue providing development tools to support system integration and vehicle production.
The same client added another development project
In July 2024, beyond the model platform and software cooperation, the two parties signed an electrical/electronic architecture cooperation master agreement. This work involves jointly developing and managing the underlying architecture for vehicle computing, communication, and various electronic systems.
The architecture agreement targets locally produced models on Volkswagen's two electric vehicle platforms in China. For XPeng, the scope of cooperation expanded from platform software for two models to a full vehicle underlying architecture used across more models. The expanded scope brought new development tasks, and both parties established joint project teams in Guangzhou and Hefei to advance engineering work together.

In Q3 of that year, XPeng's "services and others" revenue was RMB 1.31 billion, up 1.1% quarter over quarter. The financial report disclosed that the sequential growth came mainly from technical R&D service revenue under the Volkswagen architecture cooperation, with a decline in parts and accessories sales offsetting part of the increase.

In Q1 2025, XPeng again listed the increase in R&D revenue related to the Volkswagen platform software and architecture cooperation as one of the main sources of year-over-year revenue growth for this business.
